This kind of stuff makes me happy
Iraqis apparently welcomes troops as they entered the city of Shatra. The TV media is all too happy to report of civilian deaths and protests agasint the US but stories like this don't get enough coverage.

Again?
Apparently the court case for the British "Who wants to be a Millionair" show who supposidly cheated by having friends cough in the audience to give answers, has been delayed again for an outbreak of jurors coughing. I mentioned a while ago that a juror had actually been dismissed because of an uncontrollable cough developed . . . I wonder if anyone but me finds all these things a bit too funny . . . I wonder if the coughing started before or after the defendant took the stand and was crossed examined . . .

Too Funny
This article snagged from Slashdot really is quite humorous. A Houston Texas paper has an article about how the title of engineer when referring to a Software Engineer may not be allowed under current Texas law. The accident in the 30's was aweful to read about, I couldn't imagine something like that, but you'd think they'd be quick enough to see a difference. I think this is more of an issue of the human resources looking for the cheapest ticket. If they were willing to check the background of applicants they were truely considering then they would easily be able to tell if they knew enough for the position, instead the onus is put to the proffesional whose worked hard on their title and position.

So it appears to be open season for trickery and backstabbing from partners. Adobe apparently has some tests on its site claiming that the PC outperforms Apple's Power PC. MacCentral put an aticle up about it wednesday and Apple constantly shows how the Apple Power PC outperforms on solid tests, claiming Adobe's tests were faulty because of the software used. Adobe and Apple remain partners though it all, perhaps their relationship will be a guide for the US and some of our Eurpean "allies," . . . perhaps not . . .

I didn't have enough information, now I think I do
A few pundits on TV, radio, newspaper, etc. had claimed that anti-semetic feelings have been on a huge increase in France and in Europe as a whole. I hadn't heard a lot about it so I didn't have an opinion. Well, I think I can agree with them after this report. France is a bunch of haters . . .
Violent hate crimes quadrupled in France in 2002 to the highest level in a decade, with more than half the assaults aimed at Jews, a national study has found. . . .
In the report, the committee said 193 of 313 attacks were against Jews in a "real explosion" of anti-Semitic violence. Last year, the group reported 32 acts of anti-Jewish violence.
So last year they had 70 some total and this year they have more than twice that against Jews alone . . . what were they saying about peace and law abiding?

Re: Protestors are anti-american
They may wonder why those of us think so but if they looked at the causes they are fighting for they would understand in an instant. Today's news that a town is banning yellow ribbons on public property is very similar to the 9th circuit (big surprise) banning American flags from overpasses or Portlan, Ore., officals banning our flag from fire trucks (thankfully rescinded).

I've never seen the show and don't plan on watching, but how did American Idol manage to get yet another finalist with a rap sheet? Lia Haberman of E! I think they miss the difference in that the producers said that Trenyce has been honest about her past wheras Frenchie was not.

Supreme Court Backs Stealing?
How Appealing has reported on the case. Angry Clam seems to think so, as does Justice Scalia, Rehnquist, Kennedy and Thomas. I had to read through it a couple times to understand, but the decision delt with people who were forced to put their money from an escrow account, that would essentially not earn interest because of fees, into an account to earn interest to pay for people that were too poor to defend themselves. The majority Justices said that because there was no significant loss to property that no rights were broken. The dissent called it a Robin Hood action by the government and that it forces some to fund ideas they may not agree with, therefore making it a 1st Amendment issue to look at in the future.

A lot of reports are coming out that say that Muslims believe that the sandstorms are from God to the US troops. Funny Thing
Kofi Annan said to Condoleezza Rice today that the US is legally responsible for Iraqi humanitarian aid. While true, I can't help but to laugh. I don't have the figures right in front of me but the US is the biggest supporter money wise to the UN so if the UN did help it would be a larger percentage of US money going into it with some other states mixed into the pot. Annan saying that it is the US's responsibilty is saying that the larger percentage of US money will have to go to Iraq along with some other (coalition) states mixed in the pot.
I may be wrong but I think the only difference between the two is who we say is doing it. The US or the UN, all other variables remain the same. People constantly complain about the US but without the US and what the US does the world would be worse for wear. I'm pleased with what we've done and what we're doing.

Looking up?
I just got a signal from my boss that I might lose my job in the next month or so. This is a double-edged sword I think . . .
I'm a loyal kind of guy that doesn't like to dissapoint. The company I interned with was one I believed in, both the product and the leadership. I still talk to the old gang all the time, but when I left them it was because they didn't have a place for me. So right now I'm working on contracts. That means that I'll work at a place for 6-9 months and then get moved, if theres a position, somewhere else. Otherwise I'm out on the street. I took the job because there weren't too many out there, when I got out of college. Working contracts leaves me in a hard place to put my loyalty.
The company I'm with I never see because I'm on-site and the people I work for won't need me once the contract is up next month. I've likened my employer with a pimp and I'm their tech hoe. When they see someone lookin' for what I got they put me on the corner showin' some leg and if they like what they see I'm with them and then I'm gone.
I've updated my resume and have been putting it out and actually have an interview either tomorrow or friday, just waiting word. My trouble with this had been that if the company wants me, I'll need to submit my two week notice. My contract doesn't end for a month and I don't want to leave them hanging in limbo at the end of the project, although I can get them to a fairly safe place before then, but that would leave my company in search for someone who could pick up the peices and complete a project with only two weeks or so left on it. My boss just called me and, I've never been good at picking up signals, I believe he gave me a sign that they may not have a contract to bid me on once this one is up. Taking away the pressure of leaving the company, but adding pressure to find a new job by the time the contract ends.
Of course this is all assuming I get the job I interview for this week. I've gone through talking on the phone, and that person's manager, two online tests on skill level and now they want to interview me. We shall see. This isn't half as complicated as I make it out to be running through my head, probably doesn't make too much since, but there you have it.

End of a Fairy Tale
So last night one of my childhood fairy tales ended. I was at my parents house and my mom brought the Announcements section of the newspaper over to me. In that section was the announcement for a wedding that took place this past weekend of a guy I didn't know, and a girl whom I had. From kindergarten through 8th grade I was in school with her, all the time wishing she would give me the time of day, crush's are called that for a reason. We had been friends for a while but after 8th grade we were in seperate schools and only saw eachother twice that I can remember.
The picture in the paper was beautiful, I'm glad she found the one she was meant to be with.

This story on the UK urging Iraq not to harm zoo animals sounds to be a strange request but it's not to me. For the first Desert Storm my father was in Kuwait and the zoo there had been torn to peices and the animals killed or let loose to roam the city. That just added an element of danger for those that were there and the citizens and the Iraqi's I'm sure wouldn't mind doing it again.
As a side note. A bit of World War trivia, the first bomb dropped in Berlin killed the only elephant the Berlin zoo had . . . I can't remember where I picked that up but it's stayed with me a long time . . .

Market watch
It appears as though all the world markets are all up, the DOW is at 8418.04 which is up 1.58%. Gold is down, which is a good thing I believe. Gold goes up in a bad economy to keep the money out of the markets so it going down is a sign of improvement. Another down is Brent Oil from 32.33 yesterday to 24.70, but this is so sparadic that I don't expect those figures to stay the same long.
Of course the analysts, who I haven't remarked on for some time, have the headline "Stocks sustain war gains," giving me the consumer that it is the war, and only the war that is keeping the economy up. I think that even after the war when things settle down we'll find that the economy is better off than it's been . . . but that's just imho.

2.2 Trillion dollar budget
The House, voting on party lines, narrowly passed the budget . . . just thought I'd mention it since it'll probably be buried b/c of the war news/blogging.
UPDATE:
Apparently the Senate however has chosen to shave the new tax cut and take $100 billion over the next 10 years to pay for the current war.

Who said that?
North Korea has been amazingly quiet lately, but as soon as I think that I read this "news" story. Since when did the North Korean news agency (read: North Korean Government) start reporting news? Esp on actions the US might take? I have friends that predicted strikes on the US once conflict with Iraq started, I'm glad to see that this has not yet taken place.
The Bush adminsitration has said over and over again that diplomatic efforts have not been exhausted there. I have heard military reports explaining that we are waiting for China, the biggest influence over there, to gain its footing after it's recent government changes. With that we will continue to push even harder behind the scenes to save NK's face but still get them to cooperate. NK better hope that they're not giving the administation ideas about how to deal with them . . . hmmm, a pre-emptive strike eh? Not a bad idea . . .

I'm so glad
That InstaPundit added this link today. When arguing about Iraq with Europeans (blogged about my frustration a few weeks ago) I'm constantly told that my opinion didn't matter because my news sources were all Bush-friendly and only gave half truths or straight out lies. I should go watch Bowling for Columbine for some good information.
Apparently they themselves were misled by half-truths and all out lies . . . I feel better but it frustrates me when people don't listen to reason and truth because of hatred.

Whew
My head is spinning from all the news going around. The sad thing about wartime news is that a lot of it is either mis-stated by the news or is mis-information one way or another.
Something interesting to note is that France is still being assinine. How you may ask? They now don't even want to disarm Iraq!!! Another story has detailed how EU records show that France and Germany have funded Iraq more than anyone else in the EU . . . (all via InstaPundit)
Here's the thing though. We are fighting terror. France and Germany are big supporters of that in their own countries (must . . . keep . . . on . . . topic . . .) and a lot of the attacks in their countrys would likey be Americans/Britons. Their actions are aweful and anti-american to the core, but can we afford to "kick them to the curb?" Personally I'm torn . . .

Therer is a board that read quite often, most of it's members claim to be European and Canadian. There are only a few there that believe that the war is justified and they're only suggestion is that inspections were working. They're response to the scud missles used against US troops today was that they would have been found by inspectors eventually and destroyed.
WHAT THE HECK? These same people say there is no proof that Saddam is in direct violation of 1441 and doesn't have WMD.
By having the Al Samouds (sp?) he is in direct violation.
By having the unmanned aircraft program and not admitting it he is in direct violation.
By having scud missles he is in direction violation
By having the roving chemical plants he is in direction violation.
How many direction violations does he have to commit before they realize that this is a just war? Perhaps I'm playing too much into their game of having to justify the US's actions to them. The war is on, they can't stop it and neither can Saddam.

Holy Moley Batman!
How on earth has this not been all over the place?!? (via DaghtatorBlog) CBS news has this at the bottom of a long online story:
Iraq also handed over videotapes of mobile biological weapons laboratories to inspectors. Iraq says the videos show the laboratories do not violate U.N. resolutions.
This blows my mind. How can news like this, which would show that the US knew what the heck it was talking about. Iraq lied and said that didn't have them and the US was trying to decieve everyone when in fact we knew they had them. We said what they were capable of but it was up to the inspectors to find them and inspect them but all the US got was criticism . . . this kind of stuff makes me mad . . . My thoughts
I heard a conservative anti-war talkshow host this morning talk about how France has a plan in mind from the beging and duped Bush and his administration into following it to a T. I think that was close but not right on. Bush and Co. knew what was going on. They did what they had to do and more. The ones I believe have been duped are the 50% or so anti-war citizens of the world. The split is about 50/50 for war. Minus those who are against just because the hate Bush you're left with an even smaller number.
They have led the public to believe that Saddam is making progress. That Bush is just making up where his father fell short. That Bush is after oil. That Bush and Co. have made up things about Iraq and have no evidence or reason to worry. That Bush and Co. are going it alone.
It dumbfounds me when Saddam still hasn't declared what the UN (not US) knew was there before, it had to go somewhere even if they gave it away. Former President Bush didn't fall short according the the UN mandate, if the UN is so important now, why do we say he fell short when he stopped when the UN said to stop? The US presence in Iraq has been said to be bad for oil prices in the US, even by Saudi officials who don't want the war, does it make sence then that this should be about oil? It should have been obvious from the start of this that we weren't going it alone, the UK, Spain and Australia have been big partners plus 27 other states who will be helping us in some way . . . that's the most multilateral unilateral action I've ever seen.
I've yet to hear a decent anti-war argument.

New evidence of pending chemical warfare when no chemical agents exist? It's obvious there will be action soon but the real task is to see through the initial action to the outcome. What will happen in Iraq? What will happen in the middle-east as a whole? What will happen with the new divides in Europe? How will North Korea react?

So this is news II . . .
So Sheikh Yamani warned the US over Iraq saying that the US is just in it for oil, wanting to "reduce its dependence on oil from the Gulf." Wait a second, how is oil from Iraq any better?!? We're still dependant, and I think that Germany is calling their own shots (well, France is calling them but that's an aside) even though they were occupied after WWII, and what about Japan? I think that Mr. Yamani needs to rethink his stance and who he warns.
He even makes the admission that "US interests would not be served by a very low price," which could be caused by a stable Middle East. This could mean that Bush and everyone around him are naive, OR it could mean that the war isn't about oil! Maybe instead of saying Bush is short sighted you need to check your own glasses prescription.

They wonder
Alright, I've heard enough of this. Anti-war protesters keep asking why they are called "anti-American." I can tell you why. Because you are. Not for what you believe in. Not for speaking out on your opinion. But for being anti-American.
This story is the one that set me off. The 9th circuit court has struck again. First it was the report that the pledge was unconstitutional, now they say that "officials cannot allow the American flag on highway overpasses without also allowing anti-war protesters and others to post signs bearing political messages" So you're saying that government officials cannot hang the American flag in a sign of patriotism without letting anti-war people hang their messages.
If it were a debate between officials letting pro-war people hang their signs and not anti-war then I would likely see the reasoning but when you take your case to court because the American flag offends you, you are showing your own colors as anti-American. Why is there a need to desecrate the flag, or memorials, things that represent Americans who gave their lives either willingly in the military or in cases like 9-11 for our freedom? Why is that against your cause? If you're American you stand under that same flag, and that means that flag stands for peace as well as war, that's what is unique about America and Americans, we can disagree and still share the bond that makes us citizens of this great country.
But from these actions here it doesn't seem like the anti-war people are proud of being American. They want to tear down our flags and use the most liberal court in the nation against the very thing that gives them the right to voice their opinion at all. Do I want anti-war opinions silenced? No, not at all, but I don't want people taking down my flag, using the term, "Not my President," and then asking why they are refered to as Anti-American.
Sorry, but saying your not anti-american while you're stuffing the flag down the toilet is blatent hypocracy.

They seem to be leaving no stone un-turned with 40 people of a crime gang being held for yesterday's assassination. Perhaps this will help the Serbian people find the unity they've been lacking and pull their government together.

Light Bloggin' today
I haven't been satisfied with my job so I put my resume out there. I've gotten a few calls but none have worked out. Then, I get emailed yesterday (still haven't gotten in touch, phone tag so it may not work out either) and get called. The call was for a job more in the position I'm looking for, but the conundrum comes in that I am loyal. I want to finish out my contract (end of April) before leaving but the job may not be able to wait . . . we'll see, I've been working hard lately trying to do work and make phone calls. We'll see.
In other news, like I mentioned last week, partial birth abortion legislation was passed. Yeah, let's hope it stays that way.

Scientists using the Hubble space telescope have found an evaporating, Jupitor like planet in another solar system. Why is this important you may ask, it's the first time using Hubble that scientists have observed the atmosphere of a planet outside of our solar system.

We had our first space launch since the Columbia was lost to us. It's in the news but has anyone really taken notice. No Americans are actually on it, which may make the difference, but all the same have we really been changed or have we been calloused by one event after another in the past few years?
Interesting to note, this first launch is carring up a $200 million satellite that will become part of our National Security comm network.

Finally some anti-war folk figure out that protesting war by bashing Bush and holding signs that give the obligatory "Free Elvis" and "Don't Eat Meat" signs won't get the message across. Hypothetical=Big News!
So, this story in the Washington Post is about a NASA Engineer that "worried" about worst-case scenario. This is big news? I think bigger news would have been if someone HADN'T worried about the worst-case scenario. I've been involved in quite a few engineering projects/competitions and the worst-case scenario is something that HAS to be taken into consideration, even if it's not even remotely possible. This story, which has the slant of trying to put the blame of the disaster on the NASA administration for ignoring the one rogue engineer that predicted doom when in reality he admits that it was handled appropriatly. Sometimes conspiracy theorists get me burning.

The ICC
The International Criminal Court officially opens today. They make a big point about the US not being a part of it while China, Isreal and Iraq are also not involved, wonder where the bias lies . . . I studied the ICC, among other things, in an International Law course I took in college and there are a number of reasons the US might want to stay away from it. I don't know that any of the states in the next thousand years will be able to keep from letting go of some of their soverignty but if its not absolutely necessary, and the biggest perps aren't signing up (the word Kyoto should instantly pop into your head) then why waste time and resources?
